About the City of Nis

Image
Niš is a city and the seat of the territorial unit of the same name in Serbia. It is the administrative center of the Niš Administrative District and the largest city in southern and eastern Serbia. According to the final results of the census held in 2022, the City of Niš has a population of 249,501, which is a decrease compared to 2011, when 260,274 residents were counted, of which 183,164 were in the city itself.

Throughout history, the territory of the city today has been passed by the Dardanians, Thracians, Illyrians, Celts, Romans, Huns, Avars, and then the Byzantines, Serbs, Bulgarians, and Ottomans. Hungarians and Austrians have occupied the city on several occasions.

Several Roman emperors were born in Niš or used it as a residence: Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor and the founder of Constantinople, Constantius III, Constans, Vetranio, Julian, Valentinian I, Valens; and Justin I. (Visit Archaeological site Mediana.)

Emperor Claudius Gothicus decisively defeated the Goths at the Battle of Naissus (present-day Niš). Later playing a prominent role in the history of the Byzantine Empire, the city's past would earn it the nickname Imperial City.

Today, Niš is one of the most important economic centers in Serbia, especially in the electronics, mechanical engineering, textile, and tobacco industries.

Around 40,000 students attend 35 primary schools and 22 secondary schools, while over 28,000 students attend 14 faculties of the University of Niš.

The first factories appeared immediately after the liberation in 1878, and the boom of Niš's economy occurred in the period 1960-1990. At that time, the following developed as economic giants: Electronic Industry Niš, Tobacco Industry Niš, Mechanical Industry Niš, Nitex, Vulkan, Niš Brewery, Niš Bank.

Around 9,700 companies are operating in the city area with different forms of ownership: 3.4% social, 1.4% mixed, 0.1% state-owned, 1.4% cooperative, and 93.7% private companies.

Niš has always been at the crossroads of Balkan and European roads. Even in ancient times, the Roman road Via militaris, later called the Constantinople Road, passed near Nais, connecting the Roman cities of Singidunum (present-day Belgrade) and Constantinople (or Constantinople, present-day Istanbul).

Niš is strategically between the Morava river valley in North and the Vardar river valley in the south, on the main route between Greece and Central Europe. In the Niš area, this major transportation and communication route is linked with the natural corridor formed by the Nišava river valley, which runs Eastwards in the direction of Sofia and Istanbul. The city has been a passing station for the Orient Express.

The first highways date back to the 1950s when Niš was linked with the capital Belgrade through the Brotherhood and Unity Highway, the first in Southeastern Europe. International Airport “Constantine the Great” is the second largest airport in Serbia. The companies that provide services from our airport are domestic Air Serbia, Wizz Air Hungary and Ryanair.
