Introduction

After the foundation of the Technical Faculty of Niš, teaching in the field of electronics was performed by part-time teachers, mainly from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Belgrade. During mid sixties, the formation of human resources at the Department of Electronics started, when the Department of Electronics at the Technical Faculty of Niš entered the process of curricula modernization according to the developmental tendencies of the Electronic Industry in Niš. The first full-time staff members at the Department of Electronics were the teaching assistants elected in 1996, from the first generation of graduated students at the Department of Electronics at the Technical Faculty of Niš. First, full-time teacher at the Department, in 1967, was MSc Slobodan Lazović. Since then, scientific and research work of full-time employees at the Department of Electronics has been in constant development, due to the altruistic engagement of Dr. Branko Raković, full professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Belgrade.

After the foundation of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering, the Head of the Department of Electronic became Slobodan Lazović. As the Head of the Department, he gave full contribution to the development by creation of human resources. Professor Lazović, as the first PhD professor at the Department, was also a manager of the first research project Automation of Telecommunication Electric Circuits Design. Through the implementation of this project, at the Department of Electronics, 62 scientific papers were published, mostly in leading international scientific journals. Engagement in leading international scientific journal was also a condition in order to defend doctoral thesis, established by professor Raković as mentor. High scientific and research standards established by professor Raković had a positive impact on resources development at other departments of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering. This contributed to the fact that the Faculty of Electronic Engineering has acquired affirmation and recognition in international scientific and research circles. Many papers from the field of design of electric (analog) filters in telecommunication had influence on the international recognition of Raković School for Design of Electric (analog) Filters in Telecommunication. Within the Department of Electronics, Professor Raković also had influence on research in other fields, such as, impulse electronics, linear electronics, etc. During the seventies, at the Department of Electronic Engineering under the supervision of professor Raković, the defended doctoral theses gave contribution in forming of the teaching and scientific staff. During mid sixties, this was a breakthrough for new scientific areas: Digital electronics; Integrated circuits design, Microprocessor technique, Processing, Radiotechnology, Signal Processing. During the eighties, further capacity strengthening of the Department of Electronics continued within other scientific areas: Embedded System Design, Power Electronics, Real-time systems, Digital signal processing, Electronic communication networks, Thermovision, RF electronics, Signal processing, System on Chip design, Sustainable design, Renewable energy sources.

As the Electronic Industry contributed to the creation of the Faculty of Electronics in Niš, during eighties the teachers and the associate staff of the Department of Electronics gave a great contribution to the research and development of the Electronic industry, especially in the Research and Development Institute.

Together with scientific and research work at the Department, attention was given to the formation of laboratories for scientific and research work, as well as to teaching. Most of the laboratory practice of all subjects at the Department of Electronics was realized in numerous teaching laboratories that followed teaching plans and programs and the very development of electronics. Most of the current laboratories related to the accredited studies are well equipped and provide students with practical knowledge and experience, necessary for their future occupation. Many students wrote and are to defend their diploma papers within laboratories. Most of these diploma papers were awarded as the best diploma paper at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering or with “Branko Raković” Award, and later presented to the scientific audience.

With continuous modernization of curricula in accordance with developmental tendencies in electronics, the improvement of teaching process, according to capabilities of modern young people by using multimedia technologies, presents a big challenge. The Department takes care of the provision of basic knowledge in the field of electronics for all students of electronic engineering. Within the study programs Electronics and microprocessor technique at all levels, students have the possibility to specialize according to their knowledge related to design and implementation of electronic circuits, devices and systems. Currently, the following groups of chosen subjects are attractive: integrated circuits and systems design, microprocessor technology, embedded systems design, multimedia technology, power electronics, electronics in medicine, digital signal processing.

Therefore, it is expected that new teaching, scientific and research laboratories will be formed for the fields where teachers from the Department of Electronics have significant scientific and research results.
