Introduction

The history of teaching and research work at the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering is connected to the beginning of the Faculty as the Department of Electronics of the Technical University of Niš. One of the members of the Commission for the establishment of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering in Niš, Academician Dr. Jovan Surutka, then associate professor of the Electrotechnical Faculty of Belgrade, taught the subject Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering to the first generation of students enrolled in 1960/61 using a new curriculum which later became generally accepted at other universities in the country, along with three books that have been the main textbooks for this subject for years. His followers continued publishing the textbook literature for this subject at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering of Niš.
Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Vorgučić published Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering - A collection of problems I in 1965, and Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering - Laboratory exercises in 1966, and in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Dragutin Mitić Collection of solved problems in electrical engineering in 1970. Prof. Dr. Dragutin Mitić published Electrical engineering- electrostatics in the form of a methodical collection of problems in 1988, and later a number of textbooks and supplementary textbooks. From 1960/61 Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Vorgučić and Prof. Dr. Radoslav Horvat, from the Electrotechnical Faculty of Belgrade, taught the subject Circuit Theory for which Prof. Dr. Radmila Petković later developed the concept of teaching. In the school year 1962/63 Prof. Dr. Jovan Surutka started the new concept and lectures on the subject Theoretical Electromagnetics and published the book Electromagnetics. His successor in that area was Prof. Dr. Dragutin Veličković, later the Head of the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering, from 1985 to 2004. A valuable contribution of Prof. Dr. Dragutin Veličković was his monograph Methods for Calculation of the Electrostatic Fields, as well as a textbook and collections of problems in electromagnetics. From several generations of staff at the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering, with Prof. Dr. Jovan Surutka as a mentor, there developed full-time professors and founders of new departments of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering of Niš, but also at other universities in the world. Prof. Dr. Predrag Rančić worked on the establishment of the Department of Power Engineering at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering of Niš. Prof. Dr. Miodrag Gmitrović, Prof. Dr. Bratislav Milovanović and Prof. Dr. Vera Marković continued their work at the Department of Telecommunications. Prof. Dr. Mirjana Petrović and Prof. Dr. Zorica Pantić are now at universities in the United States. Prof. Dr. Slavoljub Aleksić is the Head of the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering from 2005. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Dragutin Veličković more than thirty doctoral theses were defended and a great number of master theses at universities in Niš, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Čačak, Kragujevac, Priština, Banja Luka, Sarajevo, Podgorica and Skopje, where many of his former associates guide the educational and scientific research work today.
In 1984 the First Serbian Symposium on Electrostatics (ПЕС) was founded and became the International Symposium on Electrostatics in 1990. Since 2001 it is the International Conference on Electromagnetics which is held every other year at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering in Niš, organized by the Department of Theoretical Electrical Engineering, in cooperation with the Faculty of Electronic Engineering of Niš, Technical University of Sofia (Bulgaria) and the Technical University of Ilmenau (Germany). The founder and the chairman of the Conference from 1984 to 2004 was Prof. Dr. Dragutin Veličković. Dr. Vesna Javor has been the Conference chairman since 2005. The jubilee 10th ПЕС conference will be held in 2011.
